Distress tolerance
Topic
Distress tolerance is a psychological construct referring to an individual's perceived or actual capacity to withstand negative emotional or physical discomfort without resorting to maladaptive behaviors. It is a core component of Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), where specific skills are taught to help individuals survive crises and accept reality as it is. Developing these skills allows individuals to manage intense, painful emotions effectively without making the situation worse.
