VDAM (Variable-metric gradient Descent algorithm with Adaptive Moments estimation) is an optimization algorithm introduced in the RELION-4.0 software package for electron cryo-microscopy (cryo-EM) image processing. It is designed for fast and robust image refinement, including reference-free 2D class averaging and 3D reconstruction, to facilitate automated, high-throughput structure determination pipelines.
