Turtles are reptiles of the order Testudines characterized by a special bony or cartilaginous shell developed from their ribs that acts as a shield. They are divided into two major groups, the side-necked and hidden-necked turtles, based on how they retract their heads. The order includes land-dwelling tortoises, freshwater terrapins, and marine sea turtles, spanning 360 living and recently extinct species.
