Spanish Inquisition

Topic

The Tribunal of the Holy Office of the Inquisition was established in 1478 by the Catholic Monarchs, King Ferdinand II of Aragon and Queen Isabella I of Castile. Intended to maintain Catholic orthodoxy in their kingdoms, it operated under royal control and replaced the Medieval Inquisition. Over its centuries-long existence, it prosecuted thousands of individuals, particularly targeting Jewish and Muslim converts to Christianity, before being permanently abolished in 1834.
