The Sacred Band of Thebes was an elite heavy infantry unit of the ancient Theban army during the 4th century BC, consisting of 150 pairs of male lovers. Organized by the commander Gorgidas and later led by Pelopidas, the unit played a crucial role in key conflicts, including the Battle of Leuctra, before being annihilated by Philip II of Macedon at the Battle of Chaeronea.
