Ocean-based data centers, also known as underwater or subsea data centers, are facilities submerged in bodies of water to leverage natural aquatic environments for passive cooling. By utilizing surrounding seawater to dissipate heat, these facilities aim to significantly reduce energy consumption and operational costs compared to traditional land-based cooling systems. Prominent initiatives in this field include Microsoft's experimental Project Natick and commercial deployments off the coast of China.
