Nicotine is a naturally occurring alkaloid found primarily in plants of the nightshade family, most notably in tobacco. It functions as a stimulant and anxiolytic, and is highly addictive when consumed recreationally through smoking, vaping, or chewing tobacco. In its pure form, it is a colorless to yellowish, oily liquid that readily penetrates biological membranes.
