In sociology, institutionalization is the process of embedding a concept, belief, norm, or social role within an organization, social system, or society as a whole. It can also refer to the placement of individuals into highly structured, long-term institutions such as psychiatric hospitals, prisons, or care facilities, which can lead to a psychological state known as institutional syndrome.
