The federal minimum wage in the United States is the lowest hourly compensation that employers may legally pay to covered workers, established under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) of 1938. While the federal rate sets a baseline nationwide, individual states and municipalities are permitted to establish higher minimum wage rates. It is overseen and enforced by the Wage and Hour Division of the U.S. Department of Labor.
