Extinction is the termination of a biological species or a group of kinds, usually caused by the death of its last surviving member. A taxon may also become functionally extinct before this point if it loses the capacity to reproduce and recover. Determining the exact moment of extinction is often difficult and typically done retrospectively due to the vast potential range of a species.
