Zidovudine (ZDV), also known as azidothymidine (AZT), was the first antiretroviral medication approved to prevent and treat HIV/AIDS. It is a nucleoside analog reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NRTI) that is typically used in combination with other antiretroviral drugs. It is also utilized to prevent mother-to-child transmission during childbirth and as post-exposure prophylaxis.
