The Cold War was a period of geopolitical rivalry between the United States and the Soviet Union and their respective allies, the capitalist Western Bloc and communist Eastern Bloc. Beginning after World War II and ending with the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991, it involved ideological competition, military tensions, arms races, and proxy wars rather than direct combat between the two superpowers.
