Vigilante justice, or vigilantism, is the act of taking the law into one's own hands by attempting to punish perceived lawbreakers without legal authority. It typically arises from a real or perceived lack of effective law enforcement, leading individuals or groups to carry out extrajudicial punishment. While sometimes romanticized in popular culture, it is generally illegal and often results in violence and civil rights violations.
