Unrealized gains

Topic

An unrealized gain is an increase in the value of an asset, such as a stock or real estate, that has not yet been sold for cash. Often referred to as a "paper profit," the gain remains theoretical until the asset is liquidated, at which point it becomes a realized gain. In most jurisdictions, unrealized gains are not subject to capital gains taxation until the transaction is finalized.
