United States Colored Troops

Organization

The United States Colored Troops (USCT) were Union Army regiments during the American Civil War that primarily comprised African Americans, though soldiers from other ethnic groups also served. Established in response to a demand for more units, they eventually totaled 175 regiments and constituted about one-tenth of the Union Army's total manpower by the end of the war in 1865.
