Union nationalism (often referred to as Unionist nationalism) is a political concept and historical ideology, most prominently associated with 19th-century Scotland, that asserts a strong national identity can coexist with and be supported by participation in a larger political union. It posits that a nation can maintain its distinct cultural, legal, and social institutions while remaining loyal to a multinational state, such as the United Kingdom.
