The Union refers to the federal government and the loyal states of the United States during the American Civil War. Led by President Abraham Lincoln, its military forces and civilian population successfully resisted the secession of the Southern slave states that had formed the Confederate States of America. The Union's victory in 1865 preserved the United States as a single nation and led to the abolition of slavery nationwide.
