A transatlantic crossing is a passage of passengers or cargo across the Atlantic Ocean between Europe or Africa and the Americas. Historically undertaken by sailing ships and later steamships, the majority of modern passenger traffic occurs across the North Atlantic via aviation. Regular and lasting transatlantic trade routes were first established in the 16th century following the voyages of Christopher Columbus.
