A brain–computer interface (BCI) is a direct communication pathway between the brain's electrical activity and an external device, such as a computer or robotic limb. These interfaces are primarily researched and developed to assist, augment, or repair human cognitive or sensory-motor functions. Due to the brain's cortical plasticity, signals from implanted prostheses can be adapted and handled by the brain similarly to natural biological pathways.
