The thymus is a specialized primary lymphoid organ of the immune system located in the upper front part of the chest, behind the sternum and in front of the heart. It is the primary site where T cells mature, which are critical to the adaptive immune system's ability to recognize and fight off specific foreign invaders. The organ consists of two lobes, each containing an outer cortex and an inner medulla.
