The Tetrarchy was a system of government instituted by Roman Emperor Diocletian in AD 293 to govern the ancient Roman Empire. It divided power between two senior emperors, the augusti, and two junior colleagues and designated successors, the caesares. This administrative division was designed to restore stability to the empire and lasted until AD 324.
