The Sumerians were the people of Sumer, the earliest known civilization, which emerged in southern Mesopotamia (present-day south-central Iraq) during the Chalcolithic and early Bronze Ages. They developed influential city-states and are associated with early writing, urban administration, monumental architecture, and major advances in law, literature, and technology.
