The Strategic Defense Initiative (SDI), nicknamed the "Star Wars" program, was a proposed United States missile defense system designed to protect the country from ballistic nuclear weapon attacks. Announced by President Ronald Reagan in 1983, the initiative focused on ground- and space-based systems to render nuclear weapons obsolete and move away from the doctrine of mutual assured destruction.
