In mechanics, strain is defined as the relative deformation of a physical body compared to a reference position configuration. It represents how much a material has stretched or compressed relative to its original length or volume when subjected to external forces. Strain is a dimensionless quantity and can be expressed differently depending on whether it is measured relative to the initial or final configuration of the body.
