Standard Oil was an American oil production, transportation, refining, and marketing company that operated as a dominant industrial trust from 1870 to 1911. Founded by John D. Rockefeller and Henry Flagler, it became the largest oil refiner in the world before the U.S. Supreme Court ruled it an illegal monopoly and ordered its dissolution into 34 independent companies.
