Spiritual anorexia, historically known as anorexia mirabilis or holy anorexia, is a phenomenon of self-starvation motivated by religious devotion and spiritual purity rather than modern aesthetic standards. Most prevalent among Catholic women and nuns during the Middle Ages, it was practiced as a way to imitate the suffering of Jesus Christ and achieve spiritual transcendence.
