Spaceflight is the application of astronautics to fly spacecraft into or through outer space, either with or without humans on board. While most spaceflight is uncrewed and conducted using satellites or robotic space probes, it also encompasses human spaceflight missions. The era of spaceflight began in the 1950s with the launch of the Soviet Sputnik satellite and has since expanded to include extensive orbital and interplanetary exploration.
