Soft plaque, also known as vulnerable plaque, is an unstable buildup of lipids, cholesterol, and inflammatory cells within the arterial walls. Unlike hard, calcified plaque, soft plaque is covered by a thin fibrous cap, making it highly prone to rupture and the subsequent formation of blood clots. This rupture is a primary trigger for acute cardiovascular events such as heart attacks and strokes.
