The Siege of Vicksburg (May 18 – July 4, 1863) was the final major military action in the Vicksburg campaign of the American Civil War. Union forces led by Major General Ulysses S. Grant besieged the Confederate fortress city of Vicksburg, Mississippi, forcing the surrender of Lieutenant General John C. Pemberton's army. This decisive Union victory split the Confederacy in two and secured Union control of the Mississippi River.
