Sickness behavior is a coordinated set of adaptive behavioral changes, such as lethargy, depression, loss of appetite, and sleepiness, that develop in ill individuals during an infection. These behaviors represent an evolutionary, motivational state that reorganizes an organism's priorities to facilitate recovery and aid survival. They are typically triggered by pro-inflammatory cytokines acting on the central nervous system.
