The short-faced bear (genus Arctodus) is an extinct genus of highly specialized bears that inhabited North America during the Pleistocene epoch. It includes two recognized species: the lesser short-faced bear (Arctodus pristinus) and the giant short-faced bear (Arctodus simus), the latter of which is considered one of the largest known terrestrial mammalian carnivores to have ever lived.
