Topic

Sherman's March to the Sea, officially known as the Savannah campaign, was a major military campaign of the American Civil War conducted through Georgia from November 15 until December 21, 1864, by Union Major General William Tecumseh Sherman. Beginning with the departure of Union troops from the captured city of Atlanta and concluding with the capture of the port of Savannah, the campaign famously employed a "scorched earth" policy that destroyed military targets, infrastructure, and civilian property to disrupt the Confederate war effort.
