Russian is an East Slavic language belonging to the Balto-Slavic branch of the Indo-European language family. It is the native language of the Russian people and serves as an official language in Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan. Additionally, it remains widely used as a lingua franca across the former Soviet Union and is one of the six official languages of the United Nations.
