The Radical Republicans were a prominent political faction within the United States Republican Party from 1854 until the end of Reconstruction in 1877. They were distinguished by their fierce advocacy for the immediate and complete eradication of slavery, as well as their commitment to securing civil rights and voting rights for newly freed African Americans.
