Proto-writing

Topic

Proto-writing consists of early visible marks and symbol systems used to communicate limited information, emerging as early as the Neolithic period. Unlike true writing systems, which record spoken language, proto-writing relies on ideographic or mnemonic symbols to represent a restricted set of concepts. Examples include the Jiahu symbols in China, the Vinča symbols in southeastern Europe, and early clay tokens in the Near East.
