Proof of work (PoW) is a form of cryptographic proof in which one party proves to others that a specific amount of computational effort has been expended. This mechanism allows verifiers to easily confirm the computational expenditure with minimal effort. Originally designed to deter denial-of-service attacks and spam, it has become widely known as a consensus algorithm used to secure decentralized cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin.
