Plum Island is an island in the town of Southold in Suffolk County, New York, situated in Gardiners Bay off the eastern end of Long Island's North Fork. It is famously known as the site of the Plum Island Animal Disease Center, a federal research facility dedicated to studying foreign animal pathogens. The island is approximately 3 miles long and 1 mile wide, and has historically been restricted from public access.
