The Plague of Justinian (AD 541–549) was a devastating epidemic of bubonic plague that afflicted the Mediterranean Basin, Europe, and the Near East, severely impacting the Byzantine and Sasanian Empires. Named after the Byzantine Emperor Justinian I, who contracted the disease but survived, the pandemic is estimated to have killed millions of people and marked the beginning of the first plague pandemic.
