The Pechenegs were a semi-nomadic Turkic people from Central Asia who spoke the Pecheneg language. During the 9th and 10th centuries, they controlled much of the steppes of southeast Europe and the Crimean Peninsula, frequently engaging in raids and conflicts with Kievan Rus' and the Byzantine Empire.
