Paul Adolph Volcker Jr. was an American economist who served as the 12th chairman of the Federal Reserve from 1979 to 1987. He is widely credited with ending the high levels of inflation of the 1970s and 1980s through the "Volcker shock," a period of sharply increased interest rates.
