Oyster is the common name for a number of different families of salt-water bivalve molluscs that live in marine or brackish habitats. Many species have highly calcified, irregularly shaped shells and belong to the superfamily Ostreoidea. They are widely consumed as seafood and play a vital role in marine ecosystems by filtering water and creating reefs.
