Ovulation is the process in the menstrual cycle of female vertebrates where a mature egg cell is released from the ovarian follicles into the fallopian tube. In humans, this event typically occurs near the midpoint of the menstrual cycle and is triggered by a sharp rise in luteinizing hormone (LH). It represents the phase of maximum fertility during the female reproductive cycle.
