MKUltra was an illegal human experimentation program designed and undertaken by the United States Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) to develop procedures and identify drugs that could be used in altering human behavior. Initiated in 1953, the covert program involved administering chemical substances, particularly LSD, and other psychological techniques to unwitting subjects. The program was officially halted in 1973 and has since been widely condemned as a severe violation of individual rights and an abuse of power.
