Nuclear genetic mutations are alterations in the DNA sequence of genes located within the cell nucleus of eukaryotic organisms. These mutations are distinguished from extranuclear mutations, such as those occurring in mitochondrial or chloroplast DNA. Because nuclear genes encode the vast majority of proteins required for cellular function, mutations within them can lead to a wide range of genetic disorders, developmental abnormalities, and cancers.
