The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) is an intergovernmental military alliance between 32 member states from Europe and North America. Established in 1949 with the signing of the North Atlantic Treaty, the organization implements a system of collective defense whereby its independent member states agree to mutual defense in response to an attack by any external party.
