Native Americans, also known as American Indians or Indigenous Americans, are the indigenous peoples of the United States, particularly of the contiguous 48 states and Alaska. They comprise hundreds of distinct tribes, bands, and nations, each possessing unique cultures, languages, and histories. Today, they maintain sovereign tribal nations that interact with the federal and state governments of the United States.
