"Nanny state" is a political term of British origin used to describe a government or its policies as overprotective or interfering unduly with personal choice. The term likens such state intervention to the role of a nanny in child-rearing, often criticizing laws that regulate private behavior and lifestyle choices. It was popularized in 1965 by British Member of Parliament Iain Macleod.
