Muslim rule refers to the historical and contemporary systems of political and religious governance led by Islamic authorities, most notably exemplified by the caliphates. Originating in the 7th century following the death of the prophet Muhammad, these polities developed into multi-ethnic, trans-national empires that implemented Islamic law (Sharia) across vast territories spanning Asia, Africa, and Europe.
