Mormonism is the theology and religious tradition of the Latter Day Saint movement of Restorationist Christianity, which was started by Joseph Smith in Western New York in the 1820s and 1830s. It represents a distinct branch of Christian restorationism that emphasizes modern revelation, additional scriptures such as the Book of Mormon, and unique doctrines regarding the nature of God and human salvation. While historically used to describe the entire movement, the term is most prominently associated with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
