The Mississippi River is the primary river of the largest drainage basin in the United States and the second-longest river in the country. Flowing from its source at Lake Itasca in northern Minnesota, it runs south for approximately 2,340 miles to the Gulf of Mexico. Its vast watershed drains all or parts of 32 U.S. states and two Canadian provinces.
